Luka Doncic is one of the brightest young stars in the NBA today. The Mavericks’ star has had a meteoric rise since joining the league in 2018 and is now one of the best in the league. After being a Rookie of the Year, an All-Star, and an All-NBA player, many believed that Doncic would take a great leap this season and win MVP, cementing himself as one of the best in the league.
Luka Doncic – Poor shooting beyond the arc
However, Doncic has not started this season out on a great note. In the opening part of the season, Doncic has had an unimpressive record shooting the three-ball. Doncic averages about 7 attempts per game and has only converted 29.3% of his attempted shots. As of now, he is only ahead of Kelly Oubre Jr. of the Warriors, who has had a worse time shooting the three.

Doncic’s exploits with the three-point shot have never been outstanding. However, he is a more than competent shooter of the ball and can make perimeter shots when he’s needed to. One of the most memorable shots of last season was Doncic’s last-second three to get the Mavericks the victory in their playoff series against the LA Clippers.

This year, the story is different. Doncic has been an offensive juggernaut, and he has been averaging 27.3 points per game. However, his perimeter shooting will remain a concern for the Mavericks. Over the past few years, the NBA has become more three-point oriented, and players have had to adapt to that style more.
Even someone like LeBron James, who did not take many threes early in his career, is now shooting a high percentage from the three-point line now. Doncic must try to improve his luck from the perimeter soon. He is the primary offensive threat for the Mavericks, and if his shooting continues to remain poor, they will face some struggle this season.
