The tensions between the USA and Russia are at a high at the moment. It comes in part due to the imprisonment of Brittney Griner a few months ago. Detained in February of this year, the WNBA superstar has been detained in Russia for over 200 days now. Likewise, as America tries to find a solution to bring her back, athletes have come up with their own way of showing support.
Griner’s biggest advocates are probably the entire WNBA community. Commissioner Cathy Engelbert has followed the 31-year-old’s case closely. Moreover, she has also helped keep her voice alive. Each WNBA arena now has her initials on the floor, and basketball has continued to be Griner’s biggest support system. On the other hand, several peers have openly spoken in favor of the Phoenix Mercury center. Despite the vast pay disparity, no WNBA player has traveled to Russia in the winter despite millions on offer.
