The ecstatic WNBA season finally came to a close last night. The Las Vegas Aces took home the crown beating the Connecticut Suns in the best of five series. A masterclass from their point guard, Chelsea Gray, helped the Aces lift their first title in franchise history. After being snubbed from both the All-Star and All-WNBA sections, Gray made a statement. But the celebrations missed one element, Brittney Griner.

In a series-clinching Game 4 to close the show, the 29-year-old put up a game-high 20 points, 5 rebounds, and 6 assists. It wasn’t her first masterful display in the playoffs, as she has been consistent throughout. The 4-time WNBA All-Star averaged 18.3 points and 6 assists en route to taking the Aces to their first title in franchise history. However, she didn’t forget being left out as Gray said, ?They can keep the All-Star jersey. I got the ring!?

However, while there were celebrations, the pain of not having Brittney Griner continues to grow. And in a previous interview, Gray opened up about her unfortunate situation.

WNBA Finals MVP speaks about Brittney Griner

Similar to Griner, Chelsea Gray is an openly gay athlete who has stood for gender equality throughout her career. In an interview last month with Las Vegas Pride, she painfully expressed her views on Griner’s detention in Russia. Now not home for over 200 days, the reigning Finals MVP compared being away from her wife as she hoped for the seven-time All-Star to return home safe.

The Aces’ finals hero said, ?I?m away from my wife for two weeks, and I?m like, I have to get home. I can?t imagine being there for that long with no contact. I hope for her safe return, I hope she is in a good mental space”. A picture of their time on the US national team further made Gray miss her former WNBA teammate. She said, “I saw a picture recently of me and BG playing on the USA Basketball team and I can?t believe she?s not here. I miss her.??

Brittney Griner has been away from her friends and family since February. While there has been an exchange of letters, Cherelle Griner, her wife, revealed they took a dark turn recently. However, the US officials aren’t resting on the case. President Joe Biden met up with the 31-year-old’s wife to reassure their concerns ride with bringing Griner back home.

Just like past social justice stands, the WNBA has been right behind its star. Likewise, the league won’t stop its supporting stance until Brittney Griner comes back to the USA.
