NBA superstar LeBron James has been a part of some incredible teams but nothing can come close to the 2008 Redeem Team. The U.S. national team for the 2008 Beijing Olympics was filled with superstars. And they were on a mission to avenge the embarrassment in the 2004 Olympics. On October 7, ‘The Redeem Team’ documentary dropped on Netflix and it reveals the story of the team’s path to glory. James, his business partner Maverick Carter, and Dwyane Wade are executive producers of the documentary.

The documentary contains some interesting details about the team. And it has been a huge success among the fans so far. It also captures some details about the failure in 2004. The U.S. national team is the strongest team in the world filled with NBA superstars. With the NBA being the toughest league in the world, everyone expects the U.S. team to win comfortably all the time. But that might not always be possible.

And the slip-up in 2004 is a huge example of that. However, there were multiple factors that led to the failure of that team. Some of the superstars opted out of the team. So young stars like James, Wade, and Carmelo Anthony were recruited.

LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Carmelo Anthony joined the league in 2003 with huge expectations. After just finishing their Rookie year with their teams, they were recruited for the national team because some of the superstars opted out. James had a stellar rookie season winning the Rookie of the Year award. However, he never imagined he would be called for the Olympic team and he felt like he did not earn that opportunity.

“I didn’t think I earned an opportunity to be on that team. You know, literally this is the summer right after my rookie year, and all I’m thinking about is hanging out with my friends, hanging out with my family, and training,” James said in the documentary.

The team still had some big names like Allen Iverson, Tim Duncan, and Stephon Marbury. Title-winning head coach of the Detroit Pistons, Larry Brown was the coach. But the issues with the team were evident from the first game. Puerto Rico shocked the world and won the game with a 19-point difference.

The tone was set and the national team did not recover completely as Argentina beat them in the semi-finals. And the team had to settle for a Bronze medal. Even though they didn’t get much game time, James, Wade, and Anthony were motivated to get their revenge. And they did just that in 2008.
