Young Michael Jordan Writing “Embarrassing” Letters for Mother Deloris That She Never Threw Is the Perfect Mother’s Day Story

Behind every successful man, there is a mother. What better way to commemorate mother’s day than to talk about one of the most successful and the richest athletes in the world. Michael Jordan has a special connection with his mother, like every one of us has. 

Deloris Jordan is also a standout presence in ESPN’s “The Last Dance” docuseries, which sums up the life of MJ. Years ago she also taught MJ a few lessons in basketball, in an iconic video.

The iconic video is a perfect mother’s day post for all MJ fans and NBA lovers. Deloris had a crucial role in sneaker history, as Michael would have signed with Adidas, only for Deloris to convince him take the Nike meeting. Jordan’s mother forced him to go and listen to Nike’s offer. She made him understand that at the start of his career it was important for him to at least listen to what Nike was offering so that he can take the best road. Thanks to Deloris today we enjoy the famous, iconic Air Jordans.

Michael Jordan remembers the ‘embarrassing’ letters his mother kept

Deloris Jordan read a letter from her son during college about being able to afford the phone bill and postage stamps.

“My mom, she kept all my letters,” Jordan said. “It’s somewhat embarrassing, but yet it’s refreshing that I took the time to write a letter to say how much I love my mom and, you know, what I needed in college.”

Deloris was hard on her children and crafted Michael into a fierce competitor, eve when he would step out of line. She told ESPN that MJ claimed that the way she raised him in times when he used to act out would have been too harsh in today’s world. “I knew I had to set the precedent, I took him to work and made him stay in the car all day and read. I could see him from the bank window, I wanted him to know I was always watching him. We went to lunch, and then after dinner, I knew a lady at the library, so he stayed there and read some more. We didn’t have any more trouble from him after that.” Told Deloris on how he handled with MJ when he acted out like every other child.

She always made her children believe in themselves. She made sure that they know that each of them had gifts and talent of their own. Agreed that one of them grew up to become Michael Jordan. But she always knew her children’s potential. The difference was just how each approached their abilities and what they do in their lives.
