WNBA champion Brittney Griner has been making the headlines every other day following her arrest and detention in Russia. Millions of fans worldwide have extended their support on social media. Among the many who strongly advocate for the release of Griner is her wife, Cherelle Griner. Brittney and Cherelle would have never dreamt of staying away for several months in their wildest dreams. But the unfortunate circumstances have made that nightmare a reality for the couple.

Griner attended Baylor University in Texas. Griner played college basketball for four years at Baylor, from 2009 to 2013. In that span of four years, she cemented herself as one of the best prospects in the nation. She played a vital role in her team winning the NCAA championship. The Phoenix Mercury Center and Cherelle were just friends when they met. But both the young girls knew there was something special between them, especially Brittney. BG had never been in a serious relationship before Cherelle. But she had developed some genuine feelings for her. However, there came a time in their relationship when Griner had to prove how real her feelings toward Cherelle were.

The beginning of Brittney Griner and Cherelle’s relationship

After some time, the friendship between Brittney Griner and Cherelle evolved into something more complex. One night Griner with conviction texted Cherelle and made her feelings known. Cherelle appreciated Griner’s honesty but put her off, wanting things to remain as they were. Griner respected her decision, and they hung out like usual.

One night jokingly, Cherelle said to Griner, “You wouldn’t put the time to get me.” To which Griner replied with resilience,?“Oh yeah? Just watch me.” Griner made it her goal to show Cherelle that she was not looking for a casual fling and that she genuinely cared for her and would go to any lengths to prove it.?

The former WNBA champion admitted having not done this for anyone before Cherelle in her book. Griner wrote, “I had never chased a girl before- I was usually the one being pursued, or things just kind of happened.” But Griner was more than willing to chase after Cherelle.

She would meet Cherelle after class and walk her to the next one. Whenever they made plans, Griner would show up early to show how their relationship was a top priority for her. Helping her with dinner, sending cute texts, and being there for her whenever possible, Griner was doing it all. And it worked.?

After some resistance, Cherelle let her guard down and had to bite her words. Griner had genuinely put in the effort to get Cherelle, and she finally succeeded. They started dating in Griner’s senior year. After college, they parted ways. But they met again in 2018, and since the two have been together. The couple tied the knot in 2019 after Griner proposed. Cherelle changed her last name from Watson to Griner.
