When NBA icon Michael Jordan joined hands with Nike, it truly changed the sneakers industry. As a result of his endorsement deal, Nike could become the brand that it is now, making MJ a billionaire in the process. However, none of this would have been possible if his mother, Deloris Jordan, hadn’t been there to guide her son in the right direction all along the way. Recently, Hollywood star Ben Affleck talked about the importance of Deloris in Michael Jordan’s life while promoting his $30 million movie about the former Chicago Bulls player and his beyond-blockbuster deal with Nike.

Air: Courting a Legend is directed by Affleck and hits screens today. Affleck also acts in his film, playing an important role alongside Matt Damon, Viola Davis and Chris Tucker. The movie tells the story of how Sonny Vaccaro and Nike pursued a rookie Jordan to have him sign with them, creating a partnership that eventually revolutionized the sneaker industry. The film’s budget is reportedly $30 million.

Ben Affleck talks about the importance of Deloris Jordan

Affleck, Damon and Tucker recently made an appearance on the?Kelly Clarkson Show. At one point on the show, Affleck said, “You really think well, it’s gonna be Sunny’s story or it’s gonna be Michael Jordan’s story and you get halfway through the movie...You find out really like, I almost like, I was almost embarrassed that it didn’t…wasn’t obvious, to begin with that without Deloris Jordan, his mother – really guiding him and helping him and making us do – none of that would happen.”?

The two-time Academy Award winner emphasized the importance of Deloris in the movie and in Jordan’s life. He continued, “I think of my own mom, My mom loves all my movies – she thinks everything’s great. I’m like, ‘They’re not all great mom’…Nobody loves you like your mother.”

The 50-year-old reasoned, “And the way that especially young people – and the case of the NBA and entertainment – you see, they get thrust into these positions, sometimes they’re from marginalized communities. They’ve historically been taken advantage of and here they’re with these opportunities. They’re supposed to be negotiating with these massive companies…It’s a lot. And if you don’t have that person there to anchor you and guide you, you might be in trouble.”

Deloris definitely guided Michael Jordan in the right direction

NBA players get opportunities to sign deals with big brands when they start their careers. Affleck noted how since they are young while getting into such deals, they can use all the guidance that they get from people close to them.

Nike scheduled their first meeting with Michael Jordan in 1984. However, he was reluctant to attend the meeting because he was an Adidas fan. The former Bull used to receive merchandise from Adidas?and in fact, loved all the goodies that he got. He eventually agreed to attend the meeting due to his mother’s support. The rest is history and Jordan now has a net worth of approximately $1.7 billion!
