When the Lakers traded for Russell Westbrook, the world expected the franchise to have a dominant season. After all, Westbrook is a former league MVP and a member of the NBA’s 75th Anniversary Team. However, the season for the Lakers has been a complete 180. With just 29 wins, the franchise is gasping for air as it continues to drown with frequent losses. In their most recent game, the Lakers fell to the Minnesota Timberwolves by 20 points with another poor performance from Westbrook.

During the game, Russ endured plenty of trash talk from Timberwolves players such as Patrick Beverley. He would then respond in the post game interview. However, the statements that he made led him to face a heavy backlash from fans on Twitter.

The Controversial Claim

Following the loss, Westbrook sat down with reports for the post game interview. It was here that he made a controversial statement on the Timberwolves that caught the eyes of many.

“I honestly pay no mind to it. Maybe the other guys are and then they weren’t talking to me. They were talking to individual guys particularly,” said Russ.

“The trash talking doesn’t bother me. Nobody over there has done anything in this league that makes me to put my eyes up,” he added.

Clearly, Westbrook seems undeterred by the trash talking during the game. Moreover, his statement on what the Timberwolves have done in the league led fans to hit back at him.

Fans React to Russell Westbrook

Fans were enraged at Westbrook’s words. They hit back at the Lakers star by commenting on his MVP season and questioning his poor performances this season. Moreover, they also spoke about Russ not winning a title despite playing with NBA superstars such as Kevin Durant and James Harden.

Evidently, the fans have trashed Westbrook for his claim on the Timberwolves. They feel that his statements are unfair considering his lack of achievements.

What’s in Next in Store for the Lakers

Clearly, the addition of Westbrook to the franchise has not worked out. Although he cannot be singled out for the Lakers’ problems this year, it is clear that he isn’t a good fit for the team. He clearly is far off from the MVP Russ that we’ve come to know.

As the season winds down, the Lakers will aim to win as many games as possible. Although a direct entry into the playoffs looks highly unlikely, they will hope to at least make it to the play-in tournament. This will then give them an opportunity for a playoff run. Regardless, the future looks bleak for Westbrook and the Lakers this season and only time knows how the misery will end.
