A former inmate from one of the penal colonies in Mordovia recently revealed some worrying details about the Russian penal colony system. According to her, Brittney Griner was being held at the harshest colony. The infamous IK-2 colony holds convicted murderers, and drug-related criminals inside crowded barracks. The ex-inmate also gave Brittney Griner a frightening warning about the horrors of the IK-2 penal colony.

Nadya Tolokonnikova, the founding member of Pussy Riot, recently shared what Brittney Griner could expect inside the IK-2 prison colony. She spent nearly two years in the IK-14 colony in Yavas after being convicted for “hooliganism”.

Tolokonnikova stated that she was well aware of the torture and human rights abuse that inmates are subjected to inside the penal colony. She stated that prisoners are forced to work 17 hours a day in slave-live conditions in labor camps, sewing uniforms for the Russian military and police. Moreover, failing to meet the daily quota results in extreme punishment, including daily torture.?

Tolokonnikova stated that the tortures were so brutal that some prisoners end up committing suicide. The Russian activist also disclosed that medical facilities in the penal colony were ‘practically non-existent’.?

She also gave Brittney Griner a spine-chilling warning. Nayda Tolokonnikova said,?“Let’s say you are being tortured. You go to a prison doctor to document the fact that you have been tortured. Obviously, they do not see anything and they do not see any witnesses of your torture.

“So what I would be really scared of is that Brittney hiding that she’s is being heavily oppressed,” she added.

The 34-year-old told that the prisoner doctors also refuse to help the inmates report the torture. They ignore all signs of torture or bear witness to the inhumane treatment silently.

Tolokonnikova concerned about Griner

One thing that Tolokonnikova was really scared about was that Brittney Griner might hide the truth about being oppressed in prison. The Pussy Riot member disclosed that she was threatened to stay quiet about the tortures. Otherwise, the inmates of the penal colony would have to bear the brunt of her words. However, after a year’s silence, Tolokonnikova protested in the form of a hunger striker and even got a few chief officials in Mordovia convicted.
