Michael Jordan was the first athlete in sports history to become a billionaire. Thanks to his NBA salary and brand endorsement deals, MJ currently has a net worth of an estimated $2.2 billion. His success and superstardom on and off the court allowed him to build a business empire. Interestingly, the five-time NBA MVP has earned $93.7 million from his NBA salaries. Despite making far less than what NBA superstars make nowadays, the 14-time NBA All-Star was still one of the highest-paid players at the time. And quite deservedly so.

Incidentally, he earned two-thirds of his career earnings in his final two seasons with the Chicago Bulls. Jordan earned around $30 million in the 1996-97 season and around $33 million in the 1997-98 season.

Shockingly, MJ’s salary in his final Bulls season outweighed the salaries of the all the other 14 players on the roster combined, including the salaries of superstars like Scottie Pippen, Toni Kukoc, and Dennis Rodman.

Efren Reyes’ earnings compared with Jordan

Efren Reyes is considered the greatest pool player ever by many fans across the world. For his tremendous abilities on the pool table, he has been nicknamed ‘The Magician’. Over the course of his career, Reyes won over 100 professional tournaments. The Filipino was the first ever to win the World Championship in two different categories, Nine-ball in 1999 and Eight-ball in 2004. He has also amassed medals in Asian Games and Southeast Asian Games.

According to a report from The Sun, pool players earn around $50,000 per year on an average. However, the superstars of the game earn around $100,000 per year, including endorsements.

Reyes reportedly earned around $2 million over the course of his career, including endorsements. When compared with the career earnings of Michael Jordan, Reyes has earned $91 million less than the NBA stalwart. Interestingly, MJ earned over $2 million in his first four seasons in the league alone. The stark difference in earnings between the two legends, even without adjusting to inflation, shows the stark disparity in popularity between pool and basketball.

To put things into perspective, the lowest-paid player of the Chicago Bulls 1997-98 season, Jason Caffey, went on to amass over $34 million from a successful 10-year career playing for three different teams. The salary disparity between basketball and pool is pretty shocking.
