Controversial WNBA star Brittney Griner will be spending nine long and tough years in the IK-2 penal colony in Russia’s Mordovia. Infamous for its inhumane conditions and workings, Griner’s woes seem to just keep on increasing. A recent report has further implicated a sinister plan that is being used to control Griner.

It seems there is an underlying reason behind Griner’s transfer to this prison. A huge number of inmates serving their time in the WNBA star’s penal colony work with the administration. With the administration absolutely confident regarding the working of things in the prison, Griner’s stay will be all the more difficult.

Report reveals underlying reason behind the transfer of Brittney Griner

The IK-2 penal colony located in Mordovia will house Phoenix Mercury star Brittney Griner for the next nine years. Inhumane working conditions, abusive guards, and a hostile environment are common in the penal colony.

Prisons in Russia are marked in either red or black. The color black signifies that prison gangs influence the working of things. On the other hand, prisons marked red mean that inmates work directly with the administration.

The IK-2 penal colony is marked hyper-red. As many as 30 percent of the inmates work closely with the administration to keep things in order.

According to researcher Judith Pallot, the fact that the penal colony has so much internal control is one of the reasons why Griner was sent there in the first place.

Pallot said, “Because so many of the women have children left at home, and they want to get in with the administration so that they might get early release. The administration plays on that. So obviously they put her in a place where they are absolutely confident that things are not going to get out of control.”

Therefore, there might be a possibility of inmates of the female penal colony trying to extract information from Griner. The 32-year-old would have to be careful while making friends in her new home.

Griner’s penal colony

Despite the lackluster infrastructure of the penal colony, it is still better than the average Russian penal colony. According to Pallot, toilets and washrooms will likely be in better shape compared to other prisons.

A few days ago, former inmate Nadya Tolokonnikova divulged some details about what awaits Griner. According to her, the prison has ‘slave-like conditions’. Moreover, due to the outdated machinery, there have been times when she has injured herself. Prisoners like Griner also have to adhere to a daily output that is unreasonably high.
