Considering Griner’s openness about her sexuality and her orientation, she might be a target according to former inmates. Divulging shocking details about the prison, a former prisoner talked about some of the problems that will haunt Griner.
Hostile inmates will be a problem for Brittney Griner
The IK-2 penal colony in Mordovia will house Phoenix Mercury star Brittney Griner for potentially the next nine years. She was arrested earlier this year when officials found illegal drugs in her luggage.
Griner and her family waited for months in order to receive some clarity. Finally, the writing is on the wall for the 7-time All-Star who will potentially serve nine years unless officials agree on a prisoner swap deal.
The prison housing BG is infamous for its inhumane surroundings. Cruelty, abuse, and overwork are common in the prison. Moreover, according to a former inmate, the other prisoners are also quite hostile toward the vulnerable.
She said, “Women are cruel, and they are extremely nasty to each other, vicious as hell. If you are ill, or weak or old, they will be sure to exploit you, humiliate you, harass you, sometimes just for fun.”
Prisoners are given a taste of what awaits as soon as they enter the dreaded prison. A ‘Welcome to Hell’ signboard on the entrance wall perfectly sums up the state of the prison.
Prisoners are given harsh punishments regularly
Discipline and order must be maintained at all times in the prison where Brittney Griner will be serving. One of the most popular punishments in the prison is sending inmates outdoors in spite of the bone-chilling Russian winter.
