The WNBA champion and Olympic Gold medalist, Brittney Griner, was arrested and detained in Moscow in February. Since then, she has been detained in the country. The fans worldwide have poured copious amounts of love and support towards Griner. On her birthday, she responded to her fans while awaiting her trial which will be held on October 25, 2022.

Griner’s WNBA career came to a grinding halt when she got arrested and detained in Russia. The Olympic Gold Medalist landed in Moscow on February 17, 2022, to play in the Russian league which she often does in the off-season.

After landing, Brittney Griner was detained by the airport officials as she was found carrying vape cartridges that contained cannabis oil. Cannabis is illegal in Russia. Therefore, she was arrested by the Russian authorities.

Brittney Griner responds to her fans with an optimistic note

Ever since her arrest, millions of fans worldwide have taken to Social Media to extend their support for Griner. Many famous celebrities and personalities have voiced their concerns regarding Griner’s arrest and are actively advocating her release.

Griner turned 32 on Tuesday, October 18. But she was not able to celebrate her birthday because of her detention. She is in jail on her birthday, away from family, friends, and teammates. But her fans have not stopped the outpour of support and advocation for her release.

She responded to the support of her fans with an uplifting message.?“All the support and love are definitely helping me,” her lawyers, Maria Blagovolina and Alexander Boykov quoted her saying. Griner awaits the trial preparing for her appeal to the courts in Moscow.?“Not only is this her birthday in jail away from her family, teammates, and friends, but she is very stressed in anticipation of the appeal hearing on October 25,”? Blagovolina noted. The upcoming trial will be a tall order for Griner and her team, but the love and support from her fans have made the process easier.?

Griner was sentenced to 9 years of prison for drug possession by the Moscow courts following her arrest. Griner and her legal team have been battling her case for the last few months. She pleaded guilty to the act. However, she claimed that it was an honest mistake. She now has a chance to present her appeal in front of Russian courts on October 25, 2022.
