The game of basketball, notably the NBA has seen a plethora of shooters over the years but rarely it has seen someone as good as the Golden State Warriors centerpiece, Stephen Curry. The now 34-year-old not only revolutionized the game but also made 3 point shooting almost like child’s play. But, behind his success, there was a crucial role of his father, Dell Curry. In fact, in a 2020 interview with Reuters, Dell revealed that he taught the fundamentals of the game to Steph. However, once the four-time champion disclosed that his mother, Sonya Curry also had a crucial influence in his developement. In fact, Curry even credited his mom for helping him to develop his lesser-known skill.

Sonya has always made sure that Steph and his siblings stay away from bad influences and keep themselves focused on their education. However, it appears that she not only took care of their education, but she also helped her elder son to develop a crucial basketball skill.

In a 2013 interview with Ann Killion of ‘SF Gate’, Curry said how his mother did a great job in raising him and his siblings. The Warriors guard said, “She’s a strong woman…Growing up in an NBA household, with my dad being on the road a lot, she did a great job with me and my siblings. She deserves a lot of credit for how we turned out.”

Subsequently, the 34-year-old disclosed that he got his defensive skills because of his mother. The nine-time All-Star said, “A lot of people say whatever defensive abilities I have, I get from her. My toughness and grittiness.”

Curry has always been a force to reckon with in the frontcourt but has not been known for his backcourt play. However with the incremental developement of his physical stature Curry has been known to perform his defensive responsibilities with grit especially in more recent seasons.

In the same interview, the Baby-Faced Assassin revealed that his mother used to put him through a two-week boot camp in the backyard because he used to run poorly during middle school. He disclosed that he had to work on his form and perform plyometrics. Curry expressed that he ‘hated’ these activities but further added that those activities taught him crucial work ethic.
