During an interview, Griner revealed the reason why she is so open regarding her love life and other interests. She said, “I’ve heard people say, ‘Why do you need to say you’re gay, keep your personal life to yourself?’ I say to them, ‘What about the kids who need someone to look up to?’ I’m not trying to target whoever’s complaining.”

“I’m targeting the people struggling who need someone to set an example,” she added.

Griner is proud and open regarding her sexual orientation. She was previously married to fellow WNBA star Gloria Johnson before the two called it quits. She is currently married to Cherelle Griner whom Griner met in college.
