Brittney Griner was finally released on Thursday after months of captivity in Russia through a prisoner exchange deal involving arms dealer Viktor Bout. Fans and celebrities around the world rallied for her freedom ever since her detainment. So following her release, many fans and celebrities celebrated the massive news and shared their excitement. Recently, NBA superstar Anthony Davis, who was once rumored to have been engaged with the Phoenix Mercury star, has shared a heartfelt message about Griner’s return.

Griner was first arrested in February at a Moscow airport for carrying a small amount of cannabis oil. She was detained and was then sentenced to nine years in prison. After continuous negotiations between Russia and the U.S., Griner was finally released from her Mordovian penal colony.

Anthony Davis on the return of Brittney Griner

Following the Los Angeles Lakers’ win against the Detroit Pistons, Anthony Davis spoke about the return of Brittney Griner. ?Amazing,? Davis said. ?Being in Russia for as long as she was, inhumane living conditions. I think they showed the bed she was living in.”

“When I first saw her, I didn?t know it was her because she cut her dreads ? I don?t know if it was voluntarily or what. But it?s always good to have one of your own back,? he added.

Davis noted that it is easy to forget what is actually happening in the world when you’re playing in the league. He added that Griner’s freedom was a reminder how blessed he is to play the game of basketball every single day.

NBA superstar LeBron James also shared his excitement about the return of Brittney Griner after the game against the Pistons. James said that it is great that Griner is back in the country around the holidays because she can be with her family.

Davis denied the rumors

Griner married fellow WNBA star Glory Johnson in 2015. However, the marriage was short-lived as the 2014 NBA champion filed an annulment days after the marriage. After her failed marriage, there were reports that the Phoenix Mercury star began dating Anthony Davis. Furthermore, in 2013, there were even rumors that claimed the two were engaged. However, Davis took to Twitter to deny the allegation that he was engaged.
