Brittney Griner received a great deal of support from the nation which played a crucial part in her release from Russia. Many stars and celebrities across various walks of life spoke in favor of Griner’s return. However, there have been people who have spoken against the decision that led to the release of the WNBA star. During BG’s detention, one noticeable peculiarity was the lack of support from Baylor University for their star alumnus Griner.

Dr. Greg Garrett, a Baylor professor, witnessed Brittney Griner’s heartwarming presence during her time at the Texas-based university from 2009 to 2013. She was quite a famous personality in Waco after winning the NCAA championship in 2012. In his column on Baptist News Global in November, Garrett pointed out that he was stunned by Baylor University’s silence during BG’s detention. Now, Garrett shared the negative responses that he received after his attempt to inspire Griner’s university to speak up.

As per ESPN, Greg Garrett was taken aback by the fact that people were condemning Brittney Griner instead of criticizing him for his column. He shared an account of the negative response he received. Garrett stated, “My identity, I’m a white middle-class, middle-aged guy. And nobody was saying, ‘Well, you shouldn’t be saying this and you’re a such-and-such.’ They were saying, ‘No, Brittney is this and you shouldn’t defend her.'”

Further, Greg Garrett added, “Brittney touches so many of those boxes for people that there is this very real sense that we should have left her to rot, which was the sentiment I saw over and over in my inbox.”

Moreover, Garrett reckoned that there was a sense of negativity about Brittney Griner’s release among people, which was hard for him to process. Thus, the silence from her Baylor during a tough time for the Texas resident Griner and the aftermath of Garrett’s efforts would be disappointing for her well-wishers.

However, Griner’s return to the Mercury could be a little tricky. As she is a free agent now, the 2014 WNBA champ will have to re-sign a new contract with Phoenix before her return to the court. Meanwhile, Griner’s supporters would be eager to see the WNBA star dominate the hardwood once again.
