The ’90s was an era that saw the NBA unleash some of the greatest centers the game has ever witnessed. While the game has evolved significantly since then, the league was once dominated by monstrous big men who knew nothing but the bully ball. Shaquille O’Neal, a four-time champion, was one of those behemoths walking among humans.
The generational superstar debuted in the league in 1992, taking the league by storm. As Shaq commanded the painted area, he infused hopelessness in his opponents. With his nimble movement combined with brute strength, the big man was almost impossible to contain.

He swiftly mounted the big man ladder and soon became a household name in the league. Even the league’s seasoned superstars were intimidated by Big Diesel’s superhuman athleticism and stature. However, despite him being a menace on the hardwood, he had an entertaining personality and loved to have fun.
Shaq relished joking around with fans, the media, and his teammates. However, few veteran big men in the league saw all that attention seeking and jokes as a reflection of immaturity. Shaq, though, seemed to be unfazed by his peers’ comments. In fact, he went on to challenge them during an interview.
Shaquille O’Neal backed down from no one
When it came to trash talk directed toward Shaquille O’Neal, the big man never backed down. In fact, he talked back and then proceeded to annihilate his opponents.
Shaq rose to prominence in the league at a breakneck pace. This, however, did not sit well with the league’s established big men, Hakeem Olajuwon, and David Robinson. By the time Shaq entered the NBA, both legendary big men had accomplished a great deal. However, Shaq’s meteoric rise created an aura of animosity around him.
During an interview before the 1994 All-Star game, Olajuwon and Robinson fired some vocal jabs at Shaquille O’Neal.
“Shaq likes the attention, he likes to play the media game,” said Robinson. Olajuwon then agreed with the Spurs legend, noting that Shaq is supposed to be fun, but they are there to win.
Shaq seemed unimpressed by his peers’ comments. In fact, he went so far as to challenge them, declaring, “I’m coming to get you guys today. Watch out!”
And fair to say, Shaq walked the talk. He went on to throw down a mean dunk over Hakeem Olajuwon off an alley-oop. Robinson didn’t fall victim to Shaq’s dunk the same night; however, in the 1996 All-star game, it transpired.
Shaq destroyed David Robinson with a beautiful tomahawk dunk. The San Antonio crowd went ballistic despite their beloved superstar getting squashed by Shaq’s slam. Michael Jordan was also on the sideline bench, watching in amazement.
