The Phoenix Suns have been in a permanent state of flux over the last 13-odd years. Since Steve Nash’s departure, the team has missed the playoffs 10 straight times between 2010-2020. However, the addition of a different all-time PG, Chris Paul, promised a change of course. Overnight, they went from bottom-feeders to securing a berth in the NBA Finals. But, as is a trend with the franchise, even success wasn’t consistent. Last season saw Phoenix trudge mediocrity throughout the year. New owner Matt Ishbia took matters into his own hands. He launched the team into win-now mode by trading for 2-time champion Kevin Durant.

While the move paid some dividends, it seems like chemistry issues held them back from another deep playoff run. As a result, Ishbia has become a tad overzealous.

Even with Kevin Durant, Phoenix can’t catch a break

After finishing the regular season without a loss with Kevin Durant in the lineup, the team looked to poised to break out. Unfortunately, there were still lingering concerns about the time they’d had to adjust post-trade.

In the playoffs, those concerns turned out to be valid. Over their 2 series, the lack of depth and chemistry became the obvious cause of their failure. As a result, a move aimed at making them title favorites saw mediocre dividends. However, neither Ishbia nor Durant are the kind to sit around quietly.

Concerns about the squad’s chemistry might also soon fade as a new video emerged of Booker and the Slim Reaper putting in off-season work together. As the two continue to build their camaraderie, perhaps a title might be in the team’s future.

Since the offseason began, Durant and franchise cornerstone Devin Booker have clearly been busy. In the meantime, Ishbia fired head coach Monty Williams in a controversial decision and enlisted the services of Frank Vogel. His next move was an even bigger shocker.

Trading away fortune-turning Chris Paul for Bradley Beal, the message was clear. Phoenix did not want to leave winning to chance. However, there might be a whole new host of teammates around the star trio next season.

Is the Deandre Ayton trade inevitable?

This is the question now on everyone’s mind. Phoenix and the former No. 1 pick haven’t matched well. Apart from his rookie season, there have constantly been question marks surrounding the big man. His repeated altercations with Monty Williams were also a major concern.

While the firing of Williams seemed like it would appease Ayton, there might be a different play at hand here. Perhaps, Ishbia is looking to tear the whole thing down and start afresh with Booker at the helm. While discussions and rumors have been rampant about packaging Ayton for a fourth star, Phoenix’s best bet would be to acquire some much-needed depth.
