LeBron James, heading into his 19th NBA season, is no stranger to the big stage. In fact, James has been at the centre of all the hype ever since he announced himself on the global stage while playing at St. Vincent Mary’s in Akron, Ohio. Starring on the cover of Sports Illustrated prior to even making his league debut, the ‘Chosen One’ was thrust into fame since his days in highschool.

As the NBA fraternity recovered from Michael Jordan’s final retirement in 2003, they saw the next and perhaps the best successor to his Airness in a rookie LeBron James. 4 championships, Finals-MVPs and MVPs later, safe to say, the King has delivered. Being drafted by the Cavs in ’03, James resurrected Cleveland, outdoing the expectations in carrying the franchise, & leading Ohio to a title after 52 years.

Rubbishing the “Cavs players hated rookie LeBron James” narrative

NBA veteran Dajuan Wagner dismissed all the storylines about the hatred surrounding LeBron‘s entry into the league. While in conversation with Quentin Richardson and Darius Miles on the Knuckleheads podcast, James’ ex-teammates rubbished all the rumblings.

All in consensus, they referred to the Cavs players’ comments as attempts to protect, rather than diss LeBron. While it came across as jealousy/intimidation, it in fact was love and respect.

Richardson said – “They tried to soften the blow and soften the pressure for this kid that they don’t know. Nobody don’t know if he gonna live up to everything they said. They looking at it soften the blow and take the expectations and take the edge off, like hey, he’s not supposed to come here and like save everything like they being OG’s like they’re supposed to be but you know the internet and the media gonna twist their words. Bro, nobody was never hating like go ask LeBron, he was hanging with those guys back in the day.”

Wagner’s via first hand account responded to the negative publicity of those Cavaliers saying – “Bron was family man. Bron, its gonna just be attention around you know, I’m saying all that media stuff. So when it came down to that, like Bron used to be at the crib every day, almost when he was still in high school.”

Road to greatness

James clearly lived up to the initial expectations. However, who would’ve thought he’d still be in conversation for the best player in the world.
