James Wiseman going into the NBA draft was one of the top prospects in the nation. Despite only playing three games with the Memphis Tigers, Wiseman became the top recruit at the center position. Consequently, the Golden State Warriors, with the second pick, drafted Wiseman in the 2020 NBA draft. But after three underwhelming seasons, the center is on his way to the G League.

In the post-game press conference, Kerr revealed that the 7-ft center will play for the Santa Cruz Warriors, the G-League affiliate of the Warriors, for a considerable time to get the extra reps.

Kerr said, “Yeah, he going to go to Santa Cruz tomorrow and we will keep him there for an extended period to get really good practice time and some games.”?Kerr further revealed that the ‘extended period’ of Wiseman’s stay in the G-League might last up to 10 days.?

Wiseman has struggled to stay healthy and has only played 50 games so far. He missed a significant chunk of games in his rookie season due to a meniscus tear that also sidelined him for the entire season last year. Moreover, Wiseman’s performance has not justified his status as the second overall pick.

However, there is a positive note that the Dubs fans can take from Wiseman’s descent to Santa Cruz. The Warriors have done this before, and it has worked. A few seasons ago, they demoted Jordan Poole to the G-League in a similar context. Surprisingly, Poole emerged as a star after his stint in the G League. If Wiseman could emulate that, it will be huge for his career and the Warriors.
The defending champions, coming into the season, were among the favorites to make it back to the NBA finals and repeat. However, they have struggled to find success on the court.
