It was a pleasant sight for the basketball world to see the 6’9 center back on the court after 579 days! Brittney Griner made her official return to the WNBA today after her detainment in Russia. With an opportunity to represent the Phoenix Mercury again, Griner, in her very first game back, made a huge impact. A star-studded crowd showed up at the Crypto.com Arena to show their support for the 2014 WNBA champion. Former Los Angeles Lakers stars Magic Johnson, and Pau Gasol were joined by current Lakers head coach Darvin Ham along with VP Kamala Harris as the WNBA season got underway last night.

All eyes of the WNBA world were glued to the screen as the Los Angeles Sparks took on the Phoenix Mercury in LA. BG’s heartwarming moment with her former coach stood as a highlight as well.?

Brittney Griner is back like she never left

Though it was an away court for Griner, the LA crowd did not disappoint her. During the game against the Sparks, Griner received a loud standing ovation for all the struggles and hard times she went through in the last year. Going through all the mental pain to get back to what she loves is appreciable. To credit BG’s journey, several stars were out in the Crypto.com arena for her grand return.?

5-time NBA champion Magic Johnson and his wife Cookie joined the fantastic LA crowd to witness Griner’s game last night. 2-time NBA champion Pau Gasol and Lakers head coach Darvin Ham were also present.

Vice President Kamala Harris spent a special moment in Phoenix’s locker room ahead of the game, where they welcomed BG back. The 58-year-old also took time to take a memorable group picture with the entire team.?

In addition, comedian Leslie Jones was also present to support the return of the 6-time All-Star. However, amid all this star-spangled crowd, BG’s moment with her former coach stood out.?

Dawn Staley welcomes BG back with a loving hug

Under Dawn Staley’s coaching, Griner and Team USA brought home an Olympics gold medal in 2020. The 53-year-old veteran coach gave the WNBA star a tight hug and mentioned, “I love you“.?

Guess this was enough for Griner to dominate early. BG had a great game on her return as she finished with 18 points and 6 rebounds. Though the Mercury couldn’t bag a win, the 32-year-old must have enjoyed all the love.?
