Setting out on a new path, Oscar winner Ben Affleck took a huge decision in 2022, starting a production company with long-time friend and collaborator Matt Damon. The movie they chose to produce first is about NBA icon Michael Jordan – but it isn’t a story of his time on the hardwood. Convincing the Chicago Bulls legend to agree to the film wasn’t easy, but Affleck eventually got the greenlight to direct and produce the historic off-court tale that involves His Airness.
Set to release on April 5, Affleck has been giving updates through post-production and spoke about the outcome that he expects having told the story. Discussing his wife Jennifer Lopez’s role in the movie, the?Gone Girl star subtly threw shade at late American pop singer Elvis Presley.

Titled ‘Air’, the movie will narrate how the sports brand Nike struck the untested sneaker deal with Michael Jordan that proved to be disruptive without precedent. The Jordan brand goes way back into the ’90s and has acquired a following that makes up almost the entire sneaker-sporting crowd. Already at the prime of his career, Jordan raised the bar higher with the deal.
Affleck’s wife, Jennifer Lopez, has also contributed to the movie, but behind the camera. She played an important part in helping him understand black culture and the evolution of fashion in the ’90s. Adding to his updates on the movie in an interview, Affleck observed, “Black culture has historically pioneered music, dance, fashion, and it?s then been stolen, appropriated, remarketed as Elvis [Presley] or whatever,”?subtly throwing shade at the late singer.
Affleck was talking about how Michael Jordan himself helped the African-American community to prosper in the mainstream, influencing a lot of Americans with his own style and persona.

Michael Jordan immortalized as His Airness
The Air Jordan more than lives up to its hype today. Having emerged as a sports shoe endorsed by MJ-the-great, its associated history quickly had America donning it almost exclusively for fashion. Affleck and Damon revealed that?Air is all about how the Jordan family and executives at Nike made a huge brand in a short time with the deal.
Affleck shares in the interview, “The reason why Jordans were so meaningful is because culture and style in America is 90 percent driven by Black culture.” The Jordan sneaker continues to be a fashion statement for youngsters and adults today. The Jordan-Nike collaboration has been an historic deal, here to stay as part of the sports world. No wonder the?Good Will Hunting duo chose it as the subject for their new film.
