NBA legend Michael Jordan does not like to lose and fans are well aware of that. Former San Antonio Spurs star George Gervin revealed during a 2017 interview that he once got on MJ’s nerves and managed to contain him to only seven points due to one major reason. During the 1985 All-Star game, Gervin did not let Jordan score more than seven points. Interestingly, it was also the year MJ claimed to have been frozen by his teammates led by Isiah Thomas. However, Gervin had a very different opinion on the well-publicized matter.

Michael Jordan was drafted in 1984 by the Chicago Bulls. In his second year, MJ took part in the All-Star game alongside well-known rival Isiah Thomas and NBA legend Larry Bird. On the other hand, the Western Conference team had veteran players like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, and George Gervin. During the game, Gervin guarded MJ and the nine-time NBA All-Star disclosed some facts about the game a few years ago in an interview.

“Mike couldn’t go left. I’d just get on the right side and make him go that way. He was dominant right. Until he made that adjustment in the career, he didn’t take off,” recalled Gervin.

Due to his inability to operate on the left side, His Airness only managed to score seven points in the All-Star game. Gervin stated that during the game, he thought Jordan ‘wanted to kill him.’ However, MJ soon corrected this flaw and significantly improved his game from there on. And the rest is history. He was pretty much unstoppable after that, toying with world class defenders at will.

George Gervin feels differently than Michael Jordan

The 1985 All-Star game could be considered a controversial one. After the game, Michael Jordan claimed that Isiah Thomas initiated a Jordan freeze-out during the game. However, the Detroit Pistons legend rejected his claim on several occasions. During an interview with Playboy Magazine in 1997, MJ was asked if his teammates were refraining from passing the ball to him.

The Chicago Bulls legend replied, “If you go back and look at the film, you can see that Isiah was actually doing that. Once it started getting around that he was freezing me out, that?s when the ill feelings started to grow between us.”

When a similar question was asked to George Gervin at the 2017 interview, he had a whole other opinion. Gervin said that MJ asked for the ball ‘quite a bit.’?Additionally, he stated that he was only a rookie back then. Therefore, no one would have felt obliged to give him special treatment. Furthermore, Gervin felt that Jordan needed to earn his way in the league.
