New Orleans Pelicans star Zion Williamson had a tough run this season. The 22-year-old star missed the majority of the season due to an injury in early January. Since then, several fans and NBA pundits have criticized him for his alleged lack of fitness and inability to recover. Amid all the noise, Williamson finally opened up about the inspiration that kept him going through his rough journey. Zion took inspiration from a multiple-time Grammy Award-winning American rapper.

Williamson’s NBA career hasn’t been a bed of roses. The #1 pick of the 2019 NBA draft went through multiple injury phases in his career. Notably, the star missed the entire 2021-22 season due to an injury. Even NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal has criticized the All-Star’s fitness on national television.

In a recent interview with Andscape, the Pelicans star opened up about his childhood, growing up with music and his inspiration. The star admitted that the long break from playing professional basketball affected him mentally. Moreover, he revealed that the legendary rapper, The Notorious B.I.G’s songs helped him get a clearer perspective during the break.

He further revealed how these injury breaks affected him. He said, “It’s a little bit of a mental battle, because you know when I reaggravated back in February, it was tough.”

However, the 22-year-old star found his way out through Biggie’s songs. The star even named his favorite song and album, which inspired him. He added, “Notorious B.I.G.’s album Ready to Die really changed my mindset on life… Sky is the limit [Song], and you know that you keep on. Just keep on pressin’ on.”

Pelicans story this season

The Pelicans lost their Play-In game against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday night to move closer to a playoff berth. Even though Williamson recovered from his injury, the team mutually decided to bench the star on the road to the playoffs. However, the team failed to cross the line as their 2022-23 campaign came to an end.

Despite all the criticisms, several loyal Williamson fans expect the star to bounce back harder in the upcoming seasons.
