In the illustrious 76-year history of the NBA, most players have left the league with their lives changed for the good. However, the same claim cannot be made for the 2001 No.1 overall pick Kwame Brown. The former NBA forward’s claim to fame was getting drafted straight out of high school at the top of his draft class. However, it also brought immense pressure, ultimately leading to his downfall. Moreover, he became the poster child of an NBA ‘bust.’ Unfortunately, even after two decades, he has yet to escape that title. However, Brown has been ardently defending his career and himself. Over the years, the former Mr. Georgia Basketball has appeared on various platforms to speak his heart out on his career and other polarizing issues.

Being drafted No.1 overall in the NBA draft comes with its fair share of perks and hardships. However, getting drafted that high for a team to play alongside 6x NBA champion Michael Jordan is a completely different ball game. Unfortunately, Brown, who got drafted out of high school, had to suffer that fate. Thus with the entire world watching, the young forward failed to live up to the expectations and was deemed a ‘bust’ by the NBA world, a tag he tragically carries even today.?

Consequently, Brown has passionately defended his legacy and brand over the years. Similarly, he recently appeared on the Pivot podcast to speak his heart out on the same. While doing so, he also gave his candid takes on some polarizing issues.?

In one of the episode segments, amid a passionate monologue about men’s image, especially that of African-American men, Brown harped on the controversial incidents from the combat world involving Gervonta Davis and Dana White. He said, “We keep trying to tell Black men that you can ‘just man up, you have no reason to be angry’, we do. I wanted to sound that way so that people can pay attention because men are at a point where it is getting to a melting point, we get no respect. Did you see Tank Davis hiding from a woman and they called him a woman beater. What did we see with brother Dana White? The media ain’t talking about it in the same way.”

Brown talked about how black men’s problems were always pushed to the fringes as unimportant. In other words, he felt compelled to express his anger because he felt like he has been undermined his entire life by society.
