The NBA free agency is in full swing after Kevin Durant requested a trade out of the Brooklyn Nets. The two-time Finals MVP is probably the biggest player on the trade block already. Meanwhile, the future of his teammate, Kyrie Irving is also up in the air after he opted into the final year of his contract a few days ago. The Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly the favorites to land the star point guard and reunite him with former Cleveland Cavaliers teammate LeBron James.

While the Lakers are said to be focusing on Irving, there have been whispers of them trying to go for Durant. The idea of Kevin Durant and LeBron James playing together will send shivers down the spines of everyone in the league. However, it will take a monumental haul to acquire Durant and the Lakers currently don’t have much to offer.
REPORT: “As for the prospect of the Lakers trying to get in on the Durant sweepstakes themselves…a source close to the situation put the chances at “zero.” Their focus, it seems, is on Irving. And vice versa,” via @sam_amick

The Los Angeles Lakers are aware of their position and making Kyrie Irving their number one priority seems sensible. Even though it will be difficult for them to acquire Irving as well, the chances are he’ll force a trade out of Brooklyn. The Lakers may have to give up Russell Westbrook, which likely won’t be a problem for Lakers fans.

The Brooklyn Nets will be very frustrated with how things have panned out. After signing Irving and Kevin Durant as free agents in 2019, a lot was expected from them. In the three years since acquiring the duo, the Nets’ best season was when they got knocked out in the Eastern Conference Semi-finals.
Disappointing season for LeBron James and the Lakers
The Lakers had a disastrous season after they traded for Westbrook at the beginning of last season. They didn’t even qualify for the play-in tournament. Anthony Davis has had a lot of injuries ever since the Lakers won the title in 2020. Fans have grown frustrated with the eight-time All-Star. Adding Irving to the mix will certainly boost the morale of the fans.
LeBron has played with Irving before in Cleveland. They formed one of the most fearsome duos in the league as they reached three straight Finals together. They both put up historic performances in the 2016 NBA Finals to lead the Cleveland Cavaliers to their first-ever NBA championship.
