NBA legend Michael Jordan is one of the most popular individuals in the world despite having retired from basketball two decades ago. Since the beginning of his illustrious career, Jordan has been loved by many. Despite some of his shortcomings off the court, fans in the country adore his charisma. Even when MJ was involved in various altercations with his teammates, most brushed it off as competitive fire. Some speculated that he was pushing his teammates to be better as a leader. Two of Jordan’s biggest critics recently discussed a possible reason behind this identity.

At the beginning of the current NBA season, Draymond Green‘s altercation with teammate Jordan Poole was a major controversy for the Golden State Warriors and the league. Many wanted Green to be punished severely for his actions. However, that was not the case when the Chicago Bulls legend did something similar during his time in the NBA. Some believe it is because of MJ’s clean image maintained by his ad campaigns.

Senior reporter Sam Smith joined Cowherd in the episode as well. Smith is one of MJ’s biggest critics. He?is also the author of The Jordan Rules published in 1991 which makes huge allegations about the star’s behind-the-scenes actions as part of the Chicago Bulls. Smith talked about how the five-time NBA MVP was seen at the time. He said, “So back then it was, say, ‘Yeah, the guy’s tough to live with.’ Because of as you refer to those commercials he was really marketed as kind of cliche All-American guy.” He added, “They were doing those commercials to make it as American, as patriotic as it could be.”

He then emphasized how tough it is to criticize someone who is loved and considered patriotic by many. Smith recounted when he published his book, people were not ready to accept it because it did not align with how he was depicted in the commercials. The author also joked that if Jordan punched somebody, it would be the other person’s mistake! He seemed pleased with Cowherd for criticizing MJ despite ‘thought police’.
