NBA legend Dwyane Wade and actress Gabrielle Union have been married for eight years now. The celebrity couple was blessed with a baby girl, their first child together, in November 2018. With Wade having sons from previous relationships, he was very glad to have a daughter with his wife.
While it was a joyous occasion for the entire Wade household, it came after multiple heartbreaks for the parents. Wade and Union had been trying to have a baby for many years but faced miscarriages, which left the couple heartbroken. Understandably, they were over the moon after the birth of their daughter via surrogate.

Dwyane Wade was already a father to 3 sons at the time of his daughter’s birth. He was even taking care of his sister’s son. They had accepted Union as their stepmother. However, the birth of their daughter, Kaavia, brought a new light to their family. In an interview with Oprah Winfrey, Wade revealed the importance of having a girl.
He said, “It was needed. Too much muscle around the house.” Even his sons agreed with this sentiment. Wade disclosed what one of his sons expressed, “He said, ‘Dad, it’s too many guys in the house. It’s seven at all times“.
While the couple was glad to be finally having a child, they were happy to get a girl. The three-time NBA champion also mentioned how the birth of their daughter impacted their sons. He said, “I think all of our boys, when they got a chance to see their sister, hold their sister, they fell in love with her. So I think it was needed at this time”.

The couple welcomed their daughter during Wade’s final season in the NBA. The Miami Heat legend took paternity leave to make sure he was there for his wife and daughter. It was a decision that surprised a lot of people, as athletes usually never take paternity leaves. However, Wade was content with the decision he had made.
Wade’s first son with ex-girlfriend Siohvaughn Funches, Zaire, is following in the footsteps of his father and dreams of playing in the NBA. Meanwhile, their younger child, Zaya, was assigned male at birth but came out as a transgender girl in 2020. Wade and Union have been very supportive of Zaya and have revealed how proud they are of her.
