On January 28, 2022, the outcome of the game between the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics would have been different if the referees didn’t miss a foul call on?Jayson Tatum?that went against?LeBron James. It was the mistake of the referees, and they even apologized a day later. Meanwhile, shortly after the refs had made the mistake, the hoops universe was wondering whether the officials received any kind of punishment for making such mistakes during critical moments. In light of this, recently, NBA commissioner, Adam Silver, revealed how the league deals with the referees’ mistakes.
Surprisingly, the remarks made by the NBA commissioner elicited polarizing reactions from the fans. They reflected on the affair and took to social media to express their opinions.

In a recent interview with ESPN’s Sage Steele, Silver said that the NBA officials are held accountable and disciplined for making such errors. However, subsequently, he added,?“We don’t publicize discipline for officials. We don’t think that will be appropriate”
The now 60-year-old continued,?“But their assignments are affected by the quality of their calls, whether or not they progress into the playoffs and then round by round is impacted by the accuracy of their calls and their demeanor on the floor. So there is a system for overseeing and making those judgements about officials. But more to your earlier point about getting the calls right, that’s again not a new issue.”
Silver’s statements implied that the league disciplines the referees for their mistakes but not in the public eye, like many players.

In fact, they flooded the comment section of Twitter. The fans seemingly gave mixed reactions. However, most of the comments were about why the officials are not publicly disciplined, just like many players.

But when NBA players do something they shouldn’t, it gets made public? Why is that any better, commissioner? Let’s stay consistent and hold them all publicly accountable.

I don’t care if refs miss travels or carries or call fouls just keep it consistent and stop calling techs unless they come to blows or something crazy happens or is developing. Not a single person I know is a fan of those techs so why are refs waking around running the show

What, are they suspended with pay, like police officers 😭

Why are players publicly disciplined and officials not? Why is there a different standard there? If a player messes up, they also have to immediately answer for it in postgame media availability… why do officials not?

I just wanna know how they were disciplined for the missed call on Lebron?

That's just shady with no good reason IMO

Officials need to be able to make mistakes. It’s human error, it’s quite literally impossible to get rid off. They don’t make enough money to absorb fines. When you consider everything the officials are really elite & do a amazing job.
