The situation of Brittney Griner in Russia is likely to be worse than previously expected, according to a US Marine. The WNBA star was arrested at a Moscow airport for drug possession. She pleaded guilty, however, and maintained that she had no intention of breaking the law. After multiple hearings, she was sentenced to 9 years in jail by a Russian judge.

The U.S. government is trying to bring her back home by a prisoner swap. As per reports, Russia wants arms dealer Viktor Bout in exchange for Griner and US Marine Paul Whelan. The Marine was jailed in Russia in 2020 on spying charges.

The veteran talked about his experience in Russia, which was not good. “The cells there are, you know, extremely dirty,” he said. “Food there is, you know, really bad. A lot of times the food there is rotten.” He added that he had now gained the weight he had lost during his sentence and that he is feeling good now. But he also said that the detention facility Griner now finds her in could be a bit better than where he was.

“Just know that people are fighting for you and just know that you have a lot of people supporting you back here at home and that the highest levels of the U.S. government are attempting to get you out, so keep the faith,” he said. This advice from the veteran is a stark contrast to what some celebrities have spoken about the attempts of the government.

NBA superstar LeBron James made some controversial statements about the efforts of the government to bring Griner back home. He said that he can’t imagine himself in that situation. And added that Griner could feel like the country does not have her back.

This received a lot of backlashes and James had to clarify things. Similarly, rapper Boosie Badazz called out Vice President Kamala Harris on a social media rant. He said that the government would have acted swiftly if it was Taylor Swift in Griner’s situation.
