Dillon Brooks of the Memphis Grizzlies has been the name on everyone’s lips in the past few weeks. Brooks fired shots at Los Angeles Lakers champion LeBron James, which had the NBA world enraged. While this served to hype up the Grizzlies-Lakers Round 1 matchup, Brooks and his team had an underwhelming performance in the closing games of the series.

A few days after the embarrassing loss, reports confirmed that the 27-year-old Brooks will not be continuing with his team. As the news spread on the Internet like wildfire, former NBA champion Stephen Jackson recently chimed in on the issue. Unlike the majority of NBA fans, Jackson sided with Brooks.

Dillon Brooks was drafted by the Houston Rockets as the 15th pick in the second round of the 2017 NBA draft. Later on, he was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies, and has spent the last 6 seasons with the side.

Brooks will start free agency this offseason as the Grizzlies’ front-office does not intend to extend his contract. While the majority of the NBA world celebrated this decision, 2003 NBA champion Stephen Jackson slammed the franchise’s call to banish Dillon Brooks.

Jackson said, “To me, I think that’s bulls***. I guess if you fail LeBron, everyone gets mad. If you compete against LeBron, everyone gets mad. Yeah, he got a chip on his shoulder, yeah, he might say some things but he ain’t the first person to do that. Ron Artest did it, I did it, Draymond does it.”

Not only Jackson – former NBA champion Kendrick Perkins also sided with Brooks. Perkins called out the Grizzlies’ management for making Brooks the scapegoat in defeat. Incidentally, following Ja Morant and Co’s first-round loss against the Los Angeles Lakers, LeBron James also shot back at Brooks and the Grizzlies. James uploaded a picture on Instagram along with the caption, “If you ever see me fighting in the forest with a Grizzly bear, HELP THE BEAR.”

His infamous antics notwithstanding, Dillon Brooks is a valuable asset for any NBA team. He has had decent numbers this season and aided the Grizzlies considerably on the defensive end.

From the teams surely keeping tabs on the 27-year-old, the Miami Heat can be his most likely destination. In this respect, Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated said on the Bill Simmons podcast, “Every time you see kind of Duncan Robinson running around there defensively or Tyler Herro before him, you know they could use a defensive-minded wing,” referring to the Heat’s need for a dedicated defense.

Brooks fits the criteria of a defensive-minded wing perfectly. The only thing that may stand in the way of a deal with the Heat is Brooks’ potential salary. As they go into the next season, Jimmy Butler, Kyle Lowry, Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro will earn over $134 million each. Therefore, negotiating a salary with the franchise might become an issue for the new free agent.
