WNBA star Brittney Griner is the talk of the town currently. After Russian officials arrested her a few months ago for carrying illegal substances, she was detained and subsequently sentenced to 9 years in prison.
However, this is not the first time she has sent headlines around the world. Apart from her on-the-court exploits, Griner’s off-court controversies and actions gave her all the limelight more often than not.

Needless to say, she was also part of interviews and talk shows worldwide. Just before her appearance at the ESPYs, the annual award show hosted by ESPN, Griner was in a major dilemma.
She was confused about what to wear for her much-awaited appearance at the ESPY award show. Nevertheless, she settled for one of her classic looks. Although her designer suggested a very bold dress for the show, Griner quickly rejected the idea. She said, “That would be sexy, but I don’t think I’m ready for that.“
Interestingly enough, the 2022 ESPY award show hosted by NBA star Stephen Curry shined a light on the Brittney Griner situation. While honoring the WNBA for its services, Curry also honored Griner by pointing to the Phoenix Mercury jersey he was wearing.

Phoenix Mercury star Brittney Griner is no stranger to controversies. Prior to her arrest in Russia, she played for quite some time in the country during the WNBA off-season. This was one of the reasons why people bashed her.

Moreover, her stance on the United States National Anthem was a major talking point. Back in 2020, Griner made major headlines when she talked about how the National Anthem should not play before the WNBA games.
She said, “I honestly feel we should not play the National Anthem during our season.” Furthermore, the WNBA star revealed that she will not be a part of the National Anthem whenever it is playing before the games.
