The Los Angeles Lakers legend Shaquille O’Neal is a successful person both on and off the court. The 4x NBA Champion is arguably one of the most dominant players in NBA history. Moreover, Shaq is a proud father of six children. Though he had a bumpy journey in the last few years dealing with a few personal losses and his son Shareef O’Neal’s life-threatening surgery, the big man handled the issues with grace. In a recent podcast, Shaq revealed the promise that he had made to Shareef moments before the surgery.
Shareef O’Neal underwent open-heart surgery following the diagnosis of a congenital heart defect in 2018. Shareef also wanted to become a basketball star following in his dad’s footsteps but his heart condition came in as a temporary bump on his way. After recovering from the surgery, O’Neal returned to the hardwood in 2019. He currently plays for NBA G League Ignite.
Shaq’s bizarre promise to Shareef moments before the surgery

In the recent episode of The Big Podcast, Shaquille O’Neal opened up about the moments before his son’s surgery while talking about his kids. Shaq was accompanied by Nischelle Turner and Jamal Crawford on the podcast. Turner asked Shaq about how he felt at the exact moment when he learned about his son’s illness as a parent.
The big man described the moment as terrifying but he had his ways to overcome the situation as a ‘positive thinker’. Moreover, during the conversation, Shaq continued to share his promising words which he said to a nervous Shareef before his surgery.
Shaq revealed, “I said bro when you wake up I’m gonna be the first motherfu**** you see trust me.” He further added, “If you don’t wake up, I’m coming right behind you because I am killing everybody. I’m gonna be one of the biggest serial killers and they’re gonna kill me. And we’re gonna be in heaven or hell together.”

Shaq’s joke cracked up the entire crew. However, Shareef recovered from the surgery and is currently dominating the hardwood in NBA G League. The Big Aristotle’s son is a hot prospect and is expected to make his debut in NBA in the coming years.
Shaquille O’Neal urged Shareef to give up his aspiration
During one of the episodes of The Big Podcast, Shaq revealed that he had asked Shareef to put an end to his basketball career but the 23-year-old surprised Shaq with his love for the game. Shaq said, “I’m proud of him. Because after that surgery, I told him, ‘I don’t want you doing nothing. Sit your a** down. Go to school. Get a master’s degree. Come around one of my companies. You don’t ever have to do anything.’ But he’s like ‘Nope dad I wanna play.’ So he’s gonna play.”
