Years after his diagnosis in 1996, Cookie Johnson shared how she turned to religion after being terrified by Magic Johnson’s truth about having unprotected s*x with other women.

Back in 1996, Cookie Johnson laid out the biggest nightmare she faced after Magic Johnson broke the news about his HIV diagnosis. Moreover, Cookie Johnson also gave an insight into how she dealt with the situation following the unexpected reality that hit her really hard.

Cookie Johnson turned to spirituality in tough times

In a 1996 interview with The New York Times, Cookie Johnson shared that she was not angry with Magic Johnson because he was diagnosed after they had gotten married. Magic stated that he probably caught HIV as a result of having ‘unprotected s*x with one, or several, of the women’. However, despite going through tough times during her romantic journey with Magic Johnson, the bad times helped her find spirituality in life. Cookie Johnson stated, “I was just scared for both of us. And I dealt with it, and still deal with it, spiritually. I’ve gotten deeper into my religion.”

Mrs. Johnson added, “I just turned it over to the Lord and put it in His hands and that’s how I deal with it. I’m going to let Him take care of it, and we pray for Earvin’s healing and we go on and live our days, from day to day.”

Cookie Johnson reckoned that religion helped her find stability in the midst of a chaotic situation and also brought perspective. Moreover, the 64-year-old suggested that spirituality helped her look into the future and leave the past behind. Additionally, Cookie also shared her experience of being with Johnson for all those years.

Magic Johnson started dating his wife Cookie in 1978. However, the dynamic of their relationship changed when the 12-time All-Star move to LA to play for the Lakers. A few months ago, Johnson claimed that his dedication towards basketball made him feel like he was married to the game. But his complete focus on basketball often caused some problems in their relationship.

Further, Johnson was known to be a ‘ladies man’ back in the day. Thus, his associations with other women also caused some issues in their rocky relationship.
