Several sports personalities have set up various charity foundations to tackle social causes. Be it The Shaquille O’Neal Foundation or The Stephen Curry Foundation, time and again these star athletes have shown that they care and so does Giannis Antetokounmpo. In fact, the ‘Greek Freak’ recently organized a charity event in the Big Apple where he invited tennis legend Serena Williams’ husband and Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian to take charge as the host.

Apart from being recognized as the life partner of 23 Grand Slam titles winner, Ohanian is also a well-known businessman. Throughout the years, the millionaire investor has taken part in or organized multiple charity drives for the welfare of the underserved. He has also remained an active advocate for paid paternity leaves after his daughter was born.

Alexis Ohanian gives his flowers to Giannis Antetokounmpo

On March 2, the Antetokounmpo family gathered for the ‘Poverty is No Joke’ event. Among the attendees were Alexis Ohanian and comedian Hasan Minhaj. The charity drive was organized by The Charles Antetokounmpo Family Foundation (CAFF) in New York City. Ohanian took up the role as the MC of the event, whose sole purpose, as the name suggested, was to tackle poverty.

About a week later, Ohanian took to Twitter to give a shoutout to the Antetokounmpo family for their philanthropic work. Additionally, he thanked them for inviting him to be the event’s host. Furthermore, Ohanian complimented Giannis and Thanasis for their noble work. He also sent his best wishes for the future of the foundation.

NBA world criticizes the charity event

While the star-studded event was organized to raise funds for the underserved, fans couldn’t help but point out the ‘hypocrisy’. After the event’s conclusion, several social media users subjected the Antetokounmpo family to harsh criticism. Their main issue was Giannis and other guests showing up in expensive outfits when the event was about poverty.

Several people pointed out the ‘irony’ and dropped comments on Giannis’ post. In one comment, the user mentioned that the star athletes’ outfits were ‘worth several thousand dollars and eating michellin star meals’. On user also wrote, “Think about the hundreds of thousands that could?ve been donated if they just wore normal clothes to the event, cheaper decor, more reasonably priced food.”

Eventually, the event ended on a pleasant note. However, it seemed like Giannis’ efforts went in vain, given the number of backlashes he received from fans.
