NBA all-time great Michael Jordan has won almost everything there is as a basketball player in his illustrious career. But he has not much to show for as a majority owner of the Charlotte Hornets. Jordan spent most of his time in North Carolina before joining the Chicago bulls. He grew up in Wilmington where he became a high school superstar. Then he went on to play for the University of North Carolina under legendary head coach Dean Smith and helped them win the NCAA Division I title in 1982.

Jordan played for the Chicago Bulls and the Washington Wizards during his illustrious career. However, his love for his hometown never wavered. So when an opportunity to be a minority stakeholder of the then Bobcats presented itself in 2006, MJ took it with both hands. And he became the second largest shareholder of the organization. With this came full control over the basketball side of the operations.

Michael Jordan promises to bring success to Charlotte

In 2013, the iconic Hornets name came back to the organization. After three years without making the playoffs, the Charlotte Hornets clinched a playoff spot in the 2013-14 season as the 7th seed in the Eastern Conference. But they were swept by the reigning champions, the LeBron James-led Miami Heat. However, the Hornets were arguably making strides in the right direction both on and off the court.

For his efforts to the organization, Michael Jordan received the Charlotte Business Journal Business Person of the Year award in 2015. Michael Jordan is an emotional man which NBA fans are much aware of from his crying Hall of Fame speech meme. But he is certainly not someone who would easily hide his emotions. With tears streaming down his eyes he accepted the award. It clearly showed how much it meant to the six-time NBA champion.
