NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was “stunned” by the wrongdoings of a major car rental company. The Hertz Corporation based in Florida is one of the most popular car rental companies in the country. They offer a variety of car rental options. Recently, the shocking wrongdoings of the company came to light. Hertz falsely accused its own customers of auto theft which resulted in numerous false arrests at gunpoint. Nearly 400 people have filed claims against the company in recent years.
As per reports by The Guardian, the company recently announced it will pay $168 million to settle 364 claims. However, the Los Angeles Lakers legend could not believe that something like this was allowed to happen over a long period of time.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar gives his take on Hertz’s false accusations
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar gave his thoughts about the car rental company in one of his recent articles via Kareem Substack. The six-time champion stated the article about Hertz falsely accusing its own customers “stunned” him. Also, he could not believe the number of car thefts the company reported per day.
He wrote, “This article stunned me. My summary doesn’t do justice to showing just how devastating Hertz’s actions were. Numerous people were arrested at gunpoint, handcuffed, and falsely jailed, losing jobs and homes. Meanwhile, Hertz just kept reporting car thefts at the rate of about ten a day. TEN A DAY!”
The six-time MVP then pointed out the comments of an attorney who represents several customers of Hertz. The attorney, Francis Malofiy, stated the actions of the company were wrong to the customers, wrong to the police, and wrong to the taxpayers because the police were diverted from stopping actual crimes.

Abdul-Jabbar is not happy with the settlement
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar questioned how no one from the government or law enforcement allowed it to happen for years. The false auto theft accusations once even led to a 13-year-old girl being arrested at gunpoint. Furthermore, in some cases, the jail time was as long as seven months. Also, another victim reportedly ended up losing her job and suffered a miscarriage while incarcerated.
The CEO of Hertz, Stephen Scherr, recently gave a public statement about the settlement. As per reports, Scherr said, “My intention is to lead a company that puts the customer first. In resolving these claims, we are holding ourselves to that objective.”

However, Abdul-Jabbar does not want the wrongdoers to be let go with just the settlement. He added that the victims winning the lawsuit is not enough and noted that everyone responsible for this should be arrested and tried.
