NBA superstar Stephen Curry is one of the highest-paid players at the moment. The pay disparity between NBA and the WNBA has always been growing. Now, Curry has revealed that he is doing his part in achieving gender equality. The NBA champion’s annual camp for elite prep athletes is a bit different this year.

Among the 26 high school prospects, 13 are girls. A step in the right direction in his effort for gender equality in basketball and sports.

Talking about it, “We?re just trying to normalize that basketball is basketball, and celebrate the game,” Curry said.

He continued, “My hope is to give the girls coming through the ranks something potentially to look forward to, being part of this experience and having access to me and our squad and what we do. And, also, for the boys, to give them the perspective that it?s not just them hooping. Girls can do this, too. And they should encourage, celebrate it and support it.”

This is not the first time girls have taken part in Steph’s camps, however, this is the first time the numbers are equal. His efforts would definitely go a long way in setting the tone for gender equality in sports.

The Golden State Warriors’ efforts could help the girls learn a lot from the former MVP. Also, the boys learn a valuable lesson in gender equality. As Steph said, this could inspire the boys to encourage and support gender equality among their peers. And one day it might change the variation of player salaries in the NBA and the WNBA.

The pay gap between the NBA and the WNBA has been a topic of discussion for some time now. People have voiced their disappointment in the pay difference. While most NBA players are earning millions, WNBA players are playing for a different league during the offseason to earn more.

In 2021, Curry signed a whooping 4-yr $215 million contract extension to remain with the Warriors. That means he would earn $700,000 every game, even if he doesn’t play due to load management. WNBA stars like Elena Delle Donne or Skylar Diggins Smith net an annual income of just over $221,450.

So for a single game, Curry makes a shocking triple the amount of what WNBA stars make in a year! And when you compare his annual salary, it is a mindboggling 216 times the salary of the WNBA stars! Moreover, the average annual WNBA salary was just a mere $120,650 in 2021.

The difference in pay is glaring and changes should be made at a quicker rate to increase the quality, popularity, and viewership of the WNBA. This could have a direct and positive effect on the salaries of the WNBA players.
