As the popular saying goes, “There’s more to what meets the eye”. An athlete playing at the highest level undergoes an exhaustive routine to maximize his performance. Similarly, 4x NBA champion and the reigning Finals MVP, Stephen Curry, has adopted world-class methods and technology to get the most out of his 34-year-old body. Incidentally, Curry had already factored in his physical decline during the twilight years in his training and development, after taking inspiration from his NBA father.
The Golden State Warriors star point guard’s father, Dell Curry played in the NBA during the 80s and 90s. As a result, while growing up, Steph looked up to his NBA star father. However, Dell’s struggles at the back end of his career motivated the former MVP to adopt a career-altering decision.

Not every player can claim to have played in five straight NBA Finals, except for maybe LeBron James. But Stephen Curry and the Warriors achieved the feat in the past decade. It is all the more impressive when you consider that coming into the NBA, Curry was considered fragile and injury-prone. However, the 2x MVP proved all his doubters wrong with the help of his personal trainer Brandon Payne. Together, the two mapped out an exhaustive career roadmap, even taking inspiration from his father, Dell Curry.
After entering the league, Curry already had his eyes set on a long and fruitful career. Consequently, the Dubs guard and his trainer deliberated on a long-term plan to enhance his prime and delay his retirement. The inspiration behind the idea came from his father, Dell Curry, who played 16 years in the league. However, in his twilight years, Dell toiled through a meticulous routine every day to perform at the NBA level. To avoid the same fate, the 4x NBA champion implemented numerous techniques to increase his physical prime.

According to a report by The Athletic?, “The plan was to make him[Curry] so quick with his processing and so efficient with his movement, it would limit the effect of, maybe even neutralize, any physical decline. The neurocognitive work, the elite conditioning, the flexibility training, are designed to make him think faster and make more accurate decisions. They?ve been at it for over a decade.”
4x NBA championships, 2x MVPs, and five straight trips to the Finals later, one can say Curry and his trainer’s work paid off, in fact, it worked wonders for them. Most NBA players hit their prime between 27 and 32. However, at 34, Curry appears stronger and faster than ever, with his peak ‘not’ behind him.
