As the free agency period started last night, NBA teams were quick to sign their stars to contracts so that they can lock them up for the foreseeable future. There are various types of contracts in the NBA. The Veteran minimum, G League contract, rookie scale contract. But the most valuable contracts are the max and the super max contracts. These are offered to players who the team believes are the foundational pieces of their roster.

Steph Curry became the first ever to sign a contract worth more than $200 million. In 2017, he signed a $201 million 5-year contract with the Warriors. Though Russell Westbrook topped it shortly when he signed his $206 million 5-year super max contract with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Steph then again signed a $215 million 4-year contract with the Warriors last year, which made him the first player ever to sign two max contracts worth more than $200 million.
Steph’s contract comparison with other star contracts
We will see how Steph‘s contract compares to Luka Doncic‘s (also signed last year) and to Ja’s and Jokic’s contracts, which were signed in this window. Just a small note before that, while Steph’s and Jokic’s contracts are a super-max extension. Luka’s and Ja’s contracts are rookie maximum extension contracts.
Nikola Jokic signed the biggest ever contract in NBA history worth $264 million over 5 years. Jokic’s contract kicks in from 2023. In overall value, Jokic’s contract is bigger than each of Steph’s last two super max contracts. But on a closer look, Steph will earn $48 million in the first year, while Jokic will earn around $46 million. But during the last year of respective contracts, Curry will earn up to $59 million while Jokic will earn more than $61 million.

When compared to Luka, Steph will out-earn him throughout the life of their contracts. While new contracts for both of them will kick in from this year, Steph will around $48 million in the first year and up to $59 million in the last year of the contract. Doncic meanwhile will earn $38 million this year and $48 million in his last year.
Ja‘s contract value is a minimum of $193 million, which rises to $231 with an All-NBA nod in 2022-23. Just like Luka, Steph will out-earn Morant too during the length of their contracts.
