Months have flown by; however, Brittney Griner still finds herself in hot water. The WNBA star has been detained in Russia for some time now, with new specifics surrounding her situation and condition surfacing daily. Recently, fresh details of her condition behind Russian prison bars were revealed by her lawyers. And fair to say, they are horrifying.
Alexandr Boykov, Griner’s lawyer, said in an interview with the New York Times that his client is struggling in prison. The two-time Olympic gold medalist has been imprisoned at Correctional ColonyNo.1 or IK-1, a pre-trial detention facility located an hour outside of Moscow.

The penal institution is one of the biggest in Europe, housing nearly 520,000 inmates. In fact, the Wall Street Journal labeled IK-1 as one of “Putin’s torture colonies” in 2008.
Boykov claimed that her client is imprisoned in a cramped cell with two other inmates for the vast majority of the day. In fact, the Phoenix Mercury star spends 23 hours in that tiny cell. She is also only permitted to go outside once a day to walk around a small courtyard.
Griner’s lawyer also revealed that it has been almost impossible for her to connect to her family and friends. Even scheduling phone calls with her wife, Cherelle, has been challenging.
Life behind Russian bars has certainly been tough for Griner. In August, the WNBA star was sentenced to nine years behind bars. Griner was detained at a Moscow airport when authorities discovered cannabis-infused vape cartridges in her luggage.
Brittney Griner fears that she won’t be able to return home
While describing Brittney Griner’s condition in Russia, Alexandr Boykov said she has not been in as good condition as he could sometimes find her in. He added that the WNBA star is forced to sleep on a bed modified to accommodate her height.
He went on to say that she is not convinced and is concerned about whether the United States would be able to bring her back home. She is scared stiff because she believes she will have to serve the remainder of her sentence in Russia.
