Shaquille O’Neal’s Daughter Taahirah O’Neal Is 1 of 100,000 People in the World Who Have Rare Brain Disorder

Taahirah O’Neal, daughter of NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal and Arnetta Yardbourgh. She is the firstborn child of the basketball legend. In 2018, she was diagnosed with a rare brain disease. When she was 22, she was diagnosed with Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension. The rare brain condition occurs when there is an increase in pressure inside the skull for no reason. According to reports, the symptoms of the condition mimic a brain tumor that is not present.

Because of this, the patient experience headache behind the eyes, ringing in the ears, and sometimes brief blindness. She is one of the 100,000 people in the world that have currently been diagnosed with the condition. Despite the condition, she graduated in 2020 with a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology.

And the Big Diesel did not miss her graduation. Shaq said that during his years in the NBA, he missed a lot of important days like his children’s birthdays, graduation, etc. He said that he now tries to make up for that every day. And that he tries to be the best dad every day. During the graduation party, O’Neal said that he wants her daughter to study law and take over his company so he can retire.

Shaquille O’Neal didn’t want his son to declare for the NBA draft

Shaquille O’Neal’s son Shareef O’Neal also suffered from a heart condition. He was just five years old when his heart condition was diagnosed. However, doctors at the time didn’t think surgery is required. And they have been doing regular checkups to make sure everything is alright.

But after a team practice at UCLA, Shareef felt something different in his chest. So he informed the medical team about the odd feeling. And the Doctors discovered that he had a right anomalous coronary artery. And it required surgery. Talking about it, his mother, Shaunie said, “[It’s] an artery that just grows in the wrong place…”

Shaunie said that the doctors told them that Shareef needed open-heart surgery. The surgery went successfully. However, Shareef had to spend months in recovery and almost had to relearn how to walk.

But that didn’t stop him from getting to the hardwood. After months of recovery and hard work, Shareef made it back to the court. He slowly increased the intensity of his workouts and didn’t give up. However, his father, Shaquille O’Neal didn’t want him to try his hands at the NBA. When Shareef declared for the 2022 NBA draft, Shaq was against it because of his heart condition.

However, Shareef wanted to pursue his NBA dream. And started pre-draft workouts with multiple NBA teams including the Los Angeles Lakers. Much to his dismay, Shareef went undrafted. However, the Lakers gave him a spot on the Summer League roster. After some decent outings in the summer league, Shareef has signed a deal with the G-League team, Ignite.
