Detroit basketball has the scope to see a major shift in the coming season. They made a major upgrade in the coaching department by bringing in Monty Williams, a coach who led the Phoenix Suns to the NBA Finals only a few seasons ago. His intellect is bound to have an upside on their heap of young talents. However, they may have plans to make a move on a player who formerly played under Williams with a massive deal.
This 27-year-old has attracted interest from all around the league. But with the Detroit Pistons’ resources to offer him a lucrative contract, some franchises’ plans might be in jeopardy.

It’s barely been a season since Cameron Johnson joined the Brooklyn Nets. While they lost Kevin Durant, the Nets found an unprecedented spark with their new lineup. Johnson, a 3-and-D player, played an integral part in the transformation. He’s an elite-level shooter, making nearly 40% of his three-point shots in his career. The former Phoenix Suns guard plays with high intensity, making him a defensive irritant.
His impact made it a no-brainer for the Nets to offer him a deal. The reports claimed they are intending to offer him a four-year, $80 million contract. Unfortunately for them, the Pistons could raid their vision.
Johnson shares a respectful relationship with Williams. In addition, his style complements the Pistons’ rough and tough basketball. According to The Athletic, the two-way guard will be a heavy favorite in the list of free agents Detroit will look to sign. Their reports also stated that the franchise would offer him a $100 million deal extending for four years.
Will Brooklyn fight the Pistons?
With the likes of Cade Cunningham and Jaden Ivey making Pistons relevant again, Johnson has the power to boost their chances next season. His shooting complements Cunningham’s court vision. In fact, his technical defense will only make Detroit drool more.
This does put the Brooklyn Nets in a tough position. However, Brian Windhorst claims they are willing to match the Pistons’ offer to keep Johnson on their roster. We also can’t forget his deep friendship with Mikal Bridges. The two basketball players have been close ever since playing together in Phoenix under Monty Williams.
The Nets are prepared to match offer sheets for Cam Johnson up to 4-years, $100 million, per @WindhorstESPN (https://t.co/TfuRnzqgRz):

Bridges, who has emerged as the franchise star for the Nets, made it clear that he wants Johnson as a teammate next season.
Mikal Bridges on #Nets restricted free agent Cam Johnson: “He definitely knows I want him here (in Brooklyn) and nowhere else.” Says he tells Cam to stay in Brooklyn every chance they speak.

The Nets clearly want to re-sign Cam Johnson, who was a vital piece in the Kevin Durant trade. But it doesn’t seem like the Pistons will back down if they make the offer. As it seems, either side will need to go big to convince the 27-year-old to stay. The question is – who will make the grander proposal?
