WNBA star Brittney Griner could be suffering from a serious medical condition in Russia as stated by her lawyers. The Phoenix Mercury center was detained in February for carrying cannabis oil. She was arrested and charged with smuggling drugs. While cannabis is legal in some states of the country, it is not in Russia. Before she was arrested, she texted her spouse Cherelle about being taken to a separate room in the airport. But Cherelle who is pursuing to be a lawyer did not think it would be something serious.

Initially, she was not allowed to speak with the media. This caused major concerns about her well-being back in the U.S. Griner’s spouse and her family was worried. But there was nothing they could do to make it better. They had to be patient. Later on, she was allowed to talk to the media for the first time. The talented center used this opportunity to share a message to her spouse as she held up pictures of Cherelle.

She also wished Cherelle good luck with her BAR exam. Several pictures of the former WNBA champion showed her situation in the Russian prison.

Then there were multiple court hearings. There were reports that the court hearings are very much slower than in the U.S. and it might take more time. During the hearings, Griner pleaded guilty. However, she stated that it was because of packing in a hurry. Her lawyers brought forth multiple arguments to help the basketball star.

They submitted a letter from a US medical center issuing a permit in Arizona in 2020 for the use of medical cannabis for Griner to treat her chronic pain caused by sports injuries. As per reports, Griner had ?a chronic debilitating disease caused by severe chronic pain.? So the doctor advised Griner to use medical cannabis.

It has become a bit common for athletes in the U.S. to use cannabis for pain relief. However, that is not necessarily the case in other parts of the world. After several hearings, a Russian court sentenced her to nine years in prison. People who knew her and the fans were outraged by the sentencing.

Also, there are concerns about her health in the prison. She could still be dealing with chronic pain from her injuries. And there are concerns about whether she is receiving proper nutrition and medicines if required.
