As the season goes forward, the progress of Russell Westbrook and the Los Angeles Lakers seems to be going nowhere. In their most recent matchup, the Lakers fell short of the Dallas Mavericks by 5 points. What looked like a strong bounce-back in the 3rd quarter amounted to nothing as the Lakers dropped their 34th game of the season. With this loss, they sit 9th in the Western Conference.

As always, LeBron would lead his team in scoring. The ‘King’ finished the game with 26 points, 12 rebounds and 5 assists. Second in line, was a strong contribution from Carmelo Anthony, who scored 20 points coming off the bench. However, it was yet another poor game from Westbrook.

Although he didn’t have any turnovers, Russ put up a poor shooting performance with a field goal percentage under 30%. In light of this, Westbrook made a short statement after the loss.
Russell Westbrook’s Post Game Confession
Following the loss, a depleted Westbrook spoke to the media regarding his performance. He addressed the fact that the team’s performance was relatively better than the Pelicans’ matchup. When questioned about what part of the stat sheet upset him, Russ had the following to say.
“Well, we lost. Number 2 is that looking at how I need to get better,” said Westbrook.
“I just got to be better overall. What I’m doing right now ain’t good enough,” he added.
Thereafter, he stated that he was still confident in the squad. He explained that despite the poor season; the Lakers have beaten top-tier teams and lost to bottom-tier teams. He added that when the squad collectively does the required work to win on a regular basis, they can win.

Russ’ season has been nothing short of dismal for the Lakers. On paper, his addition to the squad set the expectations on the team sky high. After all, the Lakers did add a former MVP. However, things did not pan out that way. Since his sophomore season with the OKC Thunder, Russ has had his worst ever points per game average. Moreover, even his assist numbers are nowhere close to what he achieved a season ago with the Wizards.

Added to this are his turnovers this season. He has contributed to nearly 27% of the total number of turnovers by the Lakers. In fact, the Lakers have conceded more points off of turnovers than they themselves have scored off of turnovers. Rob Pelinka’s plan of adding Westbrook to the squad in order to ease the load on LeBron has failed. Clearly, it’s now or never for Westbrook to step up. In the absence of AD, he must do anything and everything that his team needs to win.
