LeBron James recently signed a $97 million two-year extension with the Lakers and has a player option for a third year as well. It looks like the Lakers are gearing up to win another championship with LeBron and are willing to make trades to improve their roster. Russell Westbrook’s season with the Lakers was quite underwhelming. It appears that the franchise is looking into moving away from Westbrook and are still pursuing a Kyrie Irving trade.

LeBron and Kyrie were quite the duo back in Cleveland and are looking to join forces. Brooklyn Nets are in no hurry to trade the superstar who recently opted into his $37 million player option. It is reported that despite opting in, Irving is still looking to play with LeBron. A Westbrook for Irving trade would be the most ideal scenario for the Lakers. They would create some relief from the Luxury tax as Westbrook is on a $47 million-a-year contract which is significantly higher than Irving’s deal.
Marc Stein reported that the Lakers are willing to give up their two first-round picks and any dispensable assets to create a championship-level roster. Stein additionally reported that the Lakers were willing to give up Westbrook for Kyrie Irving, but the Nets were seemingly interested.?

Marc Stein said, “Sources confirm that they would be willing to surrender both firsts in tandem with Westbrook’s $47.1 million expiring contract to acquire Irving.”

LeBron James is 37 years of age, and with his new contract, he would be in the league till his 40. James is eyeing his fifth championship, and the Lakers need to change their roster to help him fulfill that endeavor.
The Nets reject Westbrook trade
It is unclear if there was an actual trade package revolving around Westbrook or if they just traded talks. Jovan Buha reported that LeBron was ‘adamant’ about bringing in Irving. It appears that Westbrook for Irving does not interest the Nets.

The Nets would be unwilling to take the extra salary and are probably looking to regain their draft capital. Brooklyn traded away a lot of their young core to bring in Kevin Durant and Irving. They would like to maximize the trade value of their stars that might be looking for an exit.
