The Los Angeles Lakers made a surprising move by dismissing the fan favorite Matt Ryan on Wednesday. LeBron James’ Lakers have their sight set for the 15th December trade date. Furthermore, in order to make a spot on the roster, they showed the exit door to one of the fewer sharpshooters on the team. Ryan appeared for two minutes during the Lakers’ game against the Portland Trail Blazers. And who would have guessed that would be his final minutes in Lakers’ colors?

Shams Charania of The Athletic broke the news of Ryan’s departure on Wednesday. Though, there seems to be no such statement by the Lakers’ front office of Ryan’s release. However, it is assumed that this will help the Lakers with the tax bills. Furthermore, without Ryan on the team, they will save $61,000 per day. And with an empty spot in the team, the Lakers will have the flexibility to add new names to the team. But why Ryan?

Out of the 15 players on the roster, Ryan was the only one without any contract. He was on a non-guaranteed salary contract, which made him an easy target for the Lakers in order to make a spot on the team. Another reason could be the bills. As per the NBA standards, the Lakers are cash poor, as the majority of the money goes into the salaries of LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and Russell Westbrook. And removing Ryan would have helped the Lakers save some tax.
Ryan made the regular season roster because of his promising performance. However, this was not an easy decision for the Lakers given the team’s main weakness this season has been its shooting. In fact, Ryan has converted 13-of-35 3-point tries this season, for a 37.1% clip. Making him one of the team’s finest sharpshooters. And what made Ryan the fan favorite was the buzzer-beating 3-pointer against New Orleans Pelicans on 2nd November.
LeBron James’ Lakers’ recent trade plans
Whether it is the off seasons or the regular season, the Los Angeles Lakers front office seems busy looking for a potential trade deal. One of the most marked men in this conversation is Russell Westbrook. According to a recent report by?Jovan Buha of?The Athletic,?the Lakers are considering three different trade scenarios.

The first scenario is to trade Russell Westbrook. The second scenario is to trade some combination of Patrick Beverley and Kendrick Nunn. This also includes their first-draft pick or several second-draft picks. Then there is the third scenario, where they are looking for two separate deals. And now there is a spot in the team’s roster after Matt Ryan’s departure, so it’ll be interesting to see who takes that spot.
