Brittney Griner has spent more than 200 days in detention in a Russian penitentiary. Since her arrest earlier this year by airport officials for carrying illegal substances, she has been the center of all attention worldwide. A large section of Americans have expressed concern over her well-being after dismal reports of Russian penal colonies spread throughout the Internet.
Moreover, her family members and lawyers have put pressure on the Government to look for a solution to bring the WNBA star back home. Although there have not been many updates regarding a potential prisoner swap deal that has been on the cards for some time, President Joe Biden has shown his solidarity with Griner’s family.

According to reports, the President plans to meet at the White House on Friday with family members of Brittney Griner and Michigan corporate security executive Paul Whelan.
Whelan was an integral part of the prisoner swap deal devised by officials for Griner’s release. Following her sentencing, there have been efforts to reach an agreement.
Officials held talks to bring Brittney Griner and Whelan back
Needless to say, there has been both love and hate for Griner around this sensitive issue. While some feel that her sentencing is just and she should complete her sentence in Russia. Others believe that the 31-year-old hooper’s detention is unfair, and she should be released immediately.

Reports suggested that the officials held talks regarding the potential prisoner swap deal. The deal reportedly stipulates that Moscow would receive notorious arms dealer Viktor Bout in return for Brittney Griner and former US Marine Paul Whelan.
Moreover, official reports confirmed that the talks were indeed held between the officials. “Quiet diplomacy is under way and it should bear fruit if Washington follows it, and not fall into propaganda through media hype to score points before an election“, said an official.

Most notably, NBA superstars like LeBron James and Stephen Curry have shown their support. On the other hand, former POTUS Donald Trump questioned Griner’s release and also called her a ‘potentially spoiled person’.
