How Joel Embiid Nearly Left the NBA in 2014

Back in 2014, the 76ers would use their 3rd pick in the draft to select Embiid. However, it would take the big man two years to make his first appearance for the team. This was because of a foot injury. During the time he was rehabilitating, there was plenty of media criticism regarding his eating habits, work ethic, and attitude. Everywhere, it was only criticism that came Embiid’s way.

However, the big man was going through something deeper and darker at that point in time. It was the passing of his brother. This was when Embiid considered returning to Africa. He even considered quitting basketball and taking up volleyball and handball.

“I was in a bad place. And that’s when all the stories were coming out every single day. ‘Oh Joel, he doesn’t want to work. He’s a bust. He’s never going to play,'” said Embiid.

“There was all this bad stuff. And then you add my loss. People don’t understand the human side of all of it,” he explained.

“But I never complain about it. We make a lot of money. Criticism comes with it,” he added.
